BBC One has confirmed it is filming a new Jonathan Creek special.

Alan Davies will reprise his role in the comedy drama, in a new tale titled Daemons' Roost.

Written by series creator David Renwick, the 90 minute episode focuses around a horror film director.

The BBC explains: "According to legend, a 19th century sorcerer named Jacob Surtees would summon the powers of Hell to terrorise and subjugate his victims at his home, Daemons' Roost.

"A hundred and fifty years after his death the house is occupied by another, equally macabre, figure: veteran horror film director Nathan Clore. With his health now failing he has summoned home his stepdaughter Alison, to share with her the chilling truth of what happened to her family there.

"However, just days before her arrival Nathan Clore has suffered a debilitating stroke, rendering him terribly paralysed and unable to communicate the very truth that she has come to learn.

"After assisting Alison's husband in the past, Jonathan Creek is called upon to help again but as the story unfolds, with ever more sinister twists and turns, the gruesome rituals that were once enacted in the dungeon of Daemons' Roost are frighteningly revived with horrifying consequences."

Sarah Alexander will return as Jonathan's wife Polly, with the episode set to guest star Warwick Davis, Emun Elliot, Ken Bones, Rosalind March, Jason Barnett and Jo Martin.

Alan Davies comments: "Jonathan Creek finds himself in real danger. It's the spookiest episode ever."

Speaking about the new episode, the BBC's comedy commissioner Shane Allen says: "Another sublime and intricately conceived treat from David Renwick and a welcome return for Alan Davies in this signature role. You can see the influence of David's unique blend of dark comedy and crime drama across television since the debut of this show nearly 20 years ago, as it remains a pioneering class act and evergreen favourite with the audience."

The episode is being filmed now for broadcast on BBC One later in the year.
