Steve Coogan is to return to the character of Alan Partridge in a new one-off spoof documentary, Alan Partridge's Scissored Isle.

The one-hour special, which will be broadcast on Sky Atlantic at the end of May, follows on from the second series of Mid Morning Matters.

Sky explains: "In this new one-off special, Alan attempts to make amends after a controversial on-air incident. Leaving behind his comfortable existence and vast detached house, Alan heads to the north on a deeply personal journey of redemption. With his Land Rover and his dog, he journeys into an unreported Britain inhabited by the very people he had offended to ask whether, in this once united kingdom, a 'schasm' has formed - a schism or chasm, between the haves and the have-nots (or haven'ts).

"From supermarket staff to payday lenders, disaffected street gangs to food scavenging 'freegans', Alan pledges to move among them; to understand them; to see the world through their eyes. And - God willing - along the way become a better citizen, a better man and a better, more sought-after broadcaster."

Talking about the new special, Steve Coogan says: "It's great to see Alan tackle the big issues of poverty and disenfranchised youth with the same clumsy ham-fistedness we would usually expect from George Osborne."

Sky's Zai Bennett comments: "Alan is back on our screens and this latest incarnation of Partridge looks to be the best yet!"

This will not be the hapless DJ's first documentary. He previously presented factual spoofs Alan Partridge On Open Books With Martin Bryce and Alan Partridge: Welcome To The Places Of My Life, both broadcast in 2012.

News of the new special follows Coogan's recent comments that he is considering a new TV chat show format for his character, in which Alan Partridge would interview real celebrities.

Alan Partridge's Scissored Isle will be broadcast on Sky Atlantic on Monday 30th May.
