Michael Crawford is set to reprise his role as the iconic character Frank Spencer.

The actor will be returning to screens as the hapless Frank in a new special one-off Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em sketch for Sport Relief. The short episode will also see Michele Dotrice back playing Frank's long-suffering wife, Betty.

The sketch will see Frank in a number of calamitous escapades culminating in a chance meeting with cycling star Sir Bradley Wiggins at the Lee Valley VeloPark. The BBC says there are "hilarious consequences".

Additionally "a whole host of famous faces from across the world of sport and entertainment" will be appearing in the new special. Names of the guest stars will be revealed at a later date.

The new sketch has been written by original creator Raymond Allen alongside Michael Crawford and The Dawson Brothers.

Michael Crawford says: "I am thrilled and delighted to have been asked to bring Frank back for Sport Relief."

Michele Dotrice adds: "It will be an absolute joy to be reunited again with Frank and fitting, for it is such a wonderful cause."

Sir Bradley Wiggins comments: "I am a huge fan of Michael so it's an absolute honour to be asked to be involved alongside such an icon of British television... and all for a great cause!"

Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em, created by Raymond Allen in the 1970s, has been off air for 38 years. The sitcom, which follows the adventures of the accident-prone Frank, ran on BBC One for three series from 1973 to 1978.

As previously reported, there were hints last year that the programme may return. The BBC confirmed they were considering reviving the show as part of the forthcoming Landmark Sitcom Season. Following today's news it is unclear whether a full new episode is under consideration. On Monday it was confirmed that Are You Being Served? is to return as part of the season.

The new Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em sketch will be shown on BBC One on Friday 18th March as part of the channel's Sport Relief Night. The TV event will also include coverage of Eddie Izzard's 27 marathons in 27 days attempt.
