Drunk History

Comedy Central UK is working on developing a British version of the hit American comedy show Drunk History.

The format, which has run for two series on Comedy Central in America to date with a third in production, sees inebriated narrators attempt to recount events from history. The drunken retellings are illustrated by live action sequences in which comic actors lip-sync to the storyteller's words.

The show was originally devised by US writer-producers Jeremy Konner and Derek Waters as a series of videos for the Funny Or Die USA website before being picked up as a TV format.

Jimmy Carr will provide the voiceover for the 30-minute UK pilot, which is scheduled to be shown on Comedy Central next year.

The actors booked to deliver the lip-sync scenes include Dustin Demri-Burns (Cardinal Burns), Tom Rosenthal (Plebs), Mat Horne (Bad Education) and Rob Beckett (Mock The Week).

Lourdes Diaz from Comedy Central says: "The show is already a smash hit in the US and I'm sure our UK audience will love this local version too. I can't wait to see some of our most loved comedians attempt to recall some of history's greatest moments in a totally inebriated state."

Andy Brereton from production company Tiger Aspect adds: "They say history is written by the winners, but on this show it's written by the wasted. It's an absolute honour to be making Drunk History for Comedy Central. I'm sure my history teacher will be very proud, as will the landlord at my local pub."

The below video from the American version of the show illustrates the premise. This one features comedy writer Tommy Blacha attempting to tell the story of Al Capone:
