Moone Boy to be re-made in America

Moone Boy, the Sky sitcom created by Chris O'Dowd, is to be re-made by the US television network ABC.

British Comedy Guide, 16th October 2014

If you love twee telly, you'll be crying into your knitted hanky tonight as the sentimental comedy slides further into sweetness in this series finale. Little Martin Moone and imaginary friend Sean (Chris O'Dowd) are in their matching suits and are getting ready for Fidelma's wedding. The bride is heavily pregnant; the wedding dress ruined by a slip of the Coco Pops, and Martin's in trouble. Can the happy couple get up the aisle before the baby appears? Gentle comedy's all very well, but a few proper laughs wouldn't go amiss.

Hannah Verdier, The Guardian, 24th March 2014

All too soon, the time has come to bid farewell to David Rawle and Chris O'Dowd as young Martin Moone and his imaginary friend Sean.

We've reached the end of their season-two adventures but hold back the tears - there's a third series of O'Dowd's semi-autobiographical comedy tales already in the pipeline. So just go with the flow as Fidelma, Dessie and their imminent bairn head down the aisle to holy matrimony on St Patrick's Day. No room for any unplanned surprises there, then.

The wedding/pregnancy storyline comes to a head in a riotous series finale. Nervy bride/mum-to-be Fidelma is sounding off at her inept dad, while young Martin senses a distinct cooling-off from his free-spirit girlfriend Majella. It's a tense time, then, and it only takes a spilt bowl of Coco Pops for disaster to ensue.

Anyhoo, there's a bounty of small comic riches from Chris O'Dowd's hand-picked ensemble (Mark Doherty has come into his own as Father Linehan), and the fact that it's St Patrick's Day has majestic significance for one extended gag.

The best kind of farce, ie it's funny.

Celebrate St. Patrick's day with the Moones

What better way to dive head first into St. Patrick's Day than to take a quick look at brilliant Irish sitcom Moone Boy.

Fidelma Moone is trying on veils while eating for two, and Ma is planning an unwanted hen night. Yes, Fidelma's wedding to drippy Dessie is mere days away, and young Martin seeks an escape. Perhaps he'll find it in Majella, from the travellers' community that's just moved into a neighbouring field.

With the bride-to-be falling asleep among the hens, and Father Linehan (hilarious Mark Doherty) hosting the stag do in church, raucous isn't quite the word for the festivities. But fear not, things degenerate... It's a superbly wince-worthy episode, with a defining moment for Martin that brings a tear to the eye of imaginary pal Sean.

Can Moone Boy get any better? This week we were treated to a spot of obscure Irish sporting history as Martin's dad Liam (Peter McDonald) relived his greatest moment of sporting triumph with a grudge golf match against the devious bank manager who'd done him down in the prime of youth. This centred on a handball match, which had nothing to do with the sport that had us transfixed in London 2012 and all to do with a kind of squash played without rackets. It was an excuse to give some of Moone Boy's excellent support cast a turn in the spotlight and they swung it with aplomb.

Keith Watson, Metro, 11th March 2014

Radio Times review

Moone Boy specialises in unlikely events, but the handball duel in this week's episode takes some beating. It's also a thoroughly deserved chance for Peter McDonald to go centre stage as beleaguered dad Liam Moone. When his former rival for Deb's affections comes calling - as a debt collector - it reopens old wounds. And the lack of family cash puts a crimp in young Martin's dreams of a Sega Mega Drive...

The ensuing showdown, as ever, combines all the sheepish delights of retro with the sharpness of a modern family sitcom. All this plus a quirky cameo from Simon Day as a sepia-tinted golfing champ.

Moone Boy: the satisfying middle ground where stupid meets feel-good.
