Laura Kingsley is newly divorced and a free woman again. She decides to leave her home of the past ten years in California and return to England to see her son, Howard, and his wife, Helen.

Unfortunately, Laura is one of those people who are dogged by calamity and her return sends Howard and Helen's life into turmoil. To make matters worse for her stuffy son, Laura discovers a new black soulmate named Oberon, who lives in a squat with his girlfriend, Holly.
