TV Review: Krod Mandoon

When I first saw the promos for Krod Mandoon and the Flaming Sword of Fire a couple of months ago, I knew I would have to watch. And I have to say that I think director Alex Hardcastle and Comedy Central have a winner. Is it stereotypical? Sure. Does it rely on sight gags, bad puns, and innuendo? Sure. Did any of that stand in the way of my enjoying it? Heck no.

Krod Mandoon: Not quite on fire

Warrior Krod aims to defeat an evil chancellor with his band of misfits: a pagan girlfriend, an inept sorcerer, a dim-witted slave, and his mentor's male lover. The fantasy spoof's gags are infantile, but a John Rhys-Davies cameo brings class to a show that boasts a running joke about bestiality.

Thumb up or thumb down? I'm going to be really courageous and go with a... thumb sideways.

There's definitely some funny stuff here, but not nearly enough; also, some first-rate comic actors, too, like Matt Lucas (Little Britain USA) and Sean Maguire - he's Krod - is good here too. It's a nearly-all-Brit cast, and as you know, the Brits do genre satire better 'n anyone else in the solar system... the holy grail being Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

As mentioned, Matt Lucas as the evil Chancellor Dongalor is the standout; also good, Philly comic Kevin Hart as hapless magician Zezelryck.

But the series needs to be funnier, much funnier. Maybe in time...

Fantasy farce flames out fast

Frequently, a moment arrives midway through a Saturday Night Live sketch when you just want out. You've been drubbed over the head one too many times by the same joke. Oh, it wasn't a bad joke at the start, but now, now you want to run far away from it and never see it again. That moment came quickly for me in Krod Mandoon and the Flaming Sword of Fire.

'Sword' is hard to swallow

Krod Mandoon and the Flaming Sword of Fire is probably Comedy Central's most lavishly produced original series to date. What was spent on sets didn't go into the script.

Mark A. Perigard, Boston Herald, 9th April 2009

'Krod Mandoon' delivers swords, sexiness, some fun

You have to love a show that offers rippling pecs, nubile women and flashing blades. I do, anyway.

New comedy 'Krod Mandoon' provides amusement

Comedy Central has come up with another half-hour, live-action series that will have audiences amused. Granted, it may not be hysterical, but Krod Mandoon and The Flaming Sword of Fire is filled with some subtle jokes, some obvious jokes and some jokes that will make audiences cringe in disgust and laughter.

Christine Grissett, The Daily Beacon, 9th April 2009

Variety Review

From the blazing redundancy in its title to sundry jokes about bestiality, Krod Mandoon and the Flaming Sword of Fire clearly needn't worry about sailing over anyone's head.

Brian Lowry, Variety, 9th April 2009

'Mandoon' falls flat in quest for lowbrow laughs

Comedy Central's Krod Mandoon and the Flaming Sword of Fire is exactly as bad as you would fear. Instead of humor, creator Peter A. Knight settles for a broad and purportedly 'wacky' level of high jinks that stopped being funny when you turned 15.

India de Beaufort Interview

IGN TV had a chance to sit down and have a chat with Krod's alluring India de Beaufort. De Beaufort plays the role of Aneka, the pagan warrior princess who, while adept at fighting and acrobatics, uses sex as her ultimate weapon. Or for when, you know, she's bored.
