With their home due for demolition by order of the council, George and Mildred Roper are forced to look to move home. Much against the wishes of George and the estate agent - who happens to be the next-door neighbour - Mildred settles on 46 Peacock Crescent, Hampton Wick.

When the Labour Exchange sends George for a job interview at Jeffrey's business, it's Mildred who's offered the post. George is left to assume the housewife role but soon discovers that it's not all sitting in front of the television and napping!

George trades his clapped-out old car for - of all things - a caravan! Mr Fourmile and the local Residents' Association offer to buy it from him; with her even snobbier sister due to visit, Mildred is particularly keen for him to get rid.

With the Fourmiles on holiday for the week, Mildred has been entrusted with the key so that she may water their plants. Lucky timing for George as his television has just stopped working. But Mildred's keen that their money is not spent on a repair or replacement, but redecorating their sitting room...

Mildred's mother has come to stay for the week, and it's become increasingly clear that she won't be able to live alone for much longer. Mildred calls a family meeting to decide what should happen to her - and George makes a discovery.
