Detectorists is returning to BBC Two for the first time in five years the BBC has confirmed, with an extended Christmas special in which the Danebury Metal Detecting Club is threatened with losing its home and ceasing to exist.

The 75-minute episode is once again written and directed by Mackenzie Crook and sees his character Andy and his friend Lance (Toby Jones) at loggerheads.

The detecting club is in trouble; developers are sniffing around, and after losing out on a big finder's fee, they need a miracle to help save their beloved scout hall.

So when Lance manages to secure a permission to search ten acres of prime, undetected land, it looks like things could be on the up. But when a mysterious relic is unearthed, he breaks protocol, threatening his friendship with Andy and the future of the DMDC.

Made by Crook's Treasure Trove Productions (Worzel Gummidge), with Channel X North (So Awkward) and John Bishop's Lola TV (The John Bishop Show), the Detectorists' special was commissioned by Jon Petrie, the BBC's director of comedy commissioning.

The BBC has also today confirmed Christmas episodes of Ghosts, The Cleaner, Mrs Brown's Boys and Two Doors Down, plus Mortimer & Whitehouse: Gone Fishing, Frankie Boyle's New World Order, Live At The Apollo, QI, Would I Lie To You? and Michael McIntyre's The Wheel, alongside a feature length-adaptation of David Walliams' Gangsta Granny Strikes Again.
