As her fortieth birthday approaches, mother of three and milkman's wife Beryl Humphries realises that there must be more to life than running the family home. She decides to improve her 'lot' by enrolling for philosophy evening classes.

However, her husband objects to her furthering her education. He is also very quick to show his dislike to her new friends - much to Beryl's dismay. Will she ever escape her 'lot'?
