Agony - The Complete First Series

Agony may not be one of ITV's most popular or well-remembered sitcoms - although running for 3 series' and returning 14 years after for another series as Agony Again means it can't be one of the worst - but Network's excellent series one release certainly does the show proud.

For those who haven't seen it before (or just need a refresh), Agony, starring Maureen Lipman, centres around the life of work-obsessed agony aunt Jane Lucas, who, despite spending every day advising others how to handle their problems, doesn't seem to be able to cope with her own, both in the bedroom and with her marriage in general.

Her psychotherapist husband - having what his therapist terms 'the male menopause', suddenly announces that he is leaving her, thus starting a chain of events which will change both their lives.

Along the way, the show deals with issues and subject including sexual problems, homosexuality, commitment, drugs and racism, being sensitive, avoiding vulgarity, and most crucially of all, staying funny. Those of you adverse to a bit of a message in their sitcoms will be glad to hear that it is all done in a subtle, far from in-your-face-lecture kind of way. It's just good, clean (well, reasonably) fun.
