Be passionate about what you're doing. This is a hugely competitive industry because there are so many more people who want to do it than there are opportunities and jobs. Persistence and determination are also crucial.
Be prepared to play the long game; making comedy writing (or any kind of screenwriting) your career is a marathon, not a sprint. As long as you keep improving your craft and keep working hard to get your writing out there into the industry, it can happen for you.
