Best Of British Northern Comedy

Classic British comedy quartet.

Holidays With Pay (1948) stars northern comedian Frank Randle, and was made at John E Blakeley's Manchester Studios and on location in Blackpool.

Jack Rogers (Randle) and his family visit Blackpool for annual holidays but become embroiled in a murder plot and a haunted house. Randle is supported by the comic talents of Dan Young, Tessie O'Shea and his real-life drinking partner, Irish tenor Josef Locke.

Over The Garden Wall (1950), starring comedians Jimmy James and Norman Evans as husband and wife, was the inspiration behind Les Dawson and Roy Barraclough's famous drag routine. The couple plan to give their daughter and new American son-in-law a right Northern Welcome - to predictably comedic results. Dan Young and Alec Pleon co-star.

Hugh Wakefield, Derek Bond and Helen Shingler star in Love's A Luxury (1952), a light comedy originally written as a stage farce.

Also featured is What A Carry On (1949), in which Jimmy Jewel and Ben Warriss decide to enlist in the army. Their singing sergeant-major is played by Josef Locke.

First released: Wednesday 23rd March 2005
