Review: Lucy Beaumont's To Hull And Back, Radio 2

Moments of genuine warmth are blended into the script expertly, and I defy your heart not to bleed when Sophie reveals she finally feels clever enough to meet her absent father.

Lucy Beaumont blog

Winning the BBC New Comedy Award really helped me get ahead. I always saw myself as a bit of an oddball comedy act but the night of the final, in Blackpool, made me think I might be able to appeal to a mainstream audience. I knew I wanted to write sitcom and I knew I wanted to do it on radio.

Lucy Beaumont, BBC Writersroom, 12th June 2014

Radio Times review

Stand-up Lucy Beaumont, the 2012 BBC New Comedy Award winner, writes and stars in this delightful sitcom pilot, a cross between a Victoria Wood sketch and a Mike Leigh film. She is Sophie, a daft ha'p'orth stuck living at home with her proud, junk-obsessed mum (Maureen Lipman).

But Sophie dreams of becoming an actress and thinks she has a shot when she gets an audition in London for "Third in the queue at Debenhams". There's a precise yet warm quality to the writing, including a rare fresh take on mishearing the Lord's Prayer, all enhanced by Lipman's peerless comic timing.
