Radio 2 has lined up Barbara Windsor to present a new series of comedy profiles.

Barbara Windsor's Funny Girls, which starts on Tuesday 5th July, will include profiles of British comediennes Hylda Baker, Beryl Reid, and Barbara's Carry On co-star Hattie Jacques.

The three part series will be followed by Barbara Windsor's Funny Gals, profiling three American comediennes: Lucille Ball, Betty Hutton, and Phyllis Diller.

The two series follow in the success of a number of comedy profile documentaries in recent years, both on television and radio.

Robert Gallacher, Radio 2's commissioning editor, said: "Over the past couple of years Radio 2 has put a spotlight on the stories of some iconic British male comics, such as Dick Emery, Dave Allen and Stanley Baxter. Now it's the turn for the ladies."
