What sort of material is acceptable in your script?

Comedy professionals often talk about the difference between "punching up" and "punching down", and it can be difficult - particularly when you're a fledgling writer - to know precisely what sort of material is acceptable in your script. Jokes that may have been fine 10 years or so ago might now present considerable problem for producers and commissioners keen to avoid too much controversy.

There are two ways to interpret these changes. Some feel the added nervousness many writers and comedians now feel is reflective of a culture becoming more aware, particularly of the feelings of racial and sexual minorities....
