Rod Stewart 'pleased to put Russell Brand in his place' after crude joke about daughter

Piers Morgan says Sir Rod Stewart felt 'very pleased' with himself after his encounter with Russell Brand at the GQ Awards in 2006, following the comic's remarks about the singer's daughter.

More live wittering to look forward to as McIntyre continues to flog his variety show, this week roping in Peter Jones from Dragons' Den to play his Send To All game, in which the comedian sends a text to Jones's entire contacts book to reap hilarious results. Elsewhere, there's "extreme flamenco" from fusion dance troupe Los Vivancos, music from Rod Stewart and James Morrison, pranks on members of the public and standup from Romesh Ranganathan.

Comedian James Acaster kicks things off nicely with his first pet hate, which is simply: geese. They are "the worst of all the animals," he argues via a nice routine on their lairy attitude. Which naturally is topped by host Frank Skinner, who goes off at a tangent with a story about geese and Rod Stewart - and as we know, Skinner's tangents and flights of fancy are what hold the show aloft, when it would otherwise be little more than "Gripe Idol". His routine about his tea-making approach is wonderful and leaves Heston Blumenthal spluttering in despair. Also on tonight: Kirsty Wark, who really doesn't like plastic flowers.

Coming on like the unlikely lovechild of Pirates Of The Caribbean's Jack Sparrow and Dot Cotton, this gig from Brand's 2006 stand-up tour showcases his talent for spinning the most mundane aspects of life into a lengthy skit.

Merely collecting his luggage at the airport is good for 10 minutes of material.

But just as you're worrying that he might be intending to describe his entire skiing holiday to us in real time - and struggling to picture him in salopettes and mittens, or with the group of alpha male northern mates he claims to have gone away with - he changes tack.

There's mileage to be had from his run-ins with Rod Stewart and Bob Geldof, as well as his specialist subject: sex. It's filthy, funny and highly educational.
