Wilson Dixon: For the First Time. Again

They take things slow in Cripple Creek, Colorado. Real slow. In this rural backwater, all there is to do is languidly strum your guitar and ponder the mysteries of life, wallow in heartache and take another slug of bourbon.

Cowboy comedian Wilson Dixon makes us yee-ha-ha-ha

Country music parody was long lorded over by Rich Hall's raspy Otis Lee Crenshaw. Then, in canters Cripple Creek Colorado's Wilson Dixon: mellower than a Sunday afternoon whiled away with a bottle of Mellow Corn bourbon. Dixon may not have the tobacco-tongued, fuck-Disney 'tude of Crenshaw. But his comedy still kicks like his psychotic horse, Andrew.

In this new four-part series, comedian Jesse Griffin brings Wilson Dixon, his "outlaw country singer" persona, to London audiences. Griffin may be familiar to listeners as the founding member of the Australian comedy trio The 4 Noels. Here, Dixon performs tracks from his "first album" and from his compilation of love songs, titled I Love You But I Also Want to Hurt You. The appeal lies in Dixie's mix of redneck drawl and his acute observations of everyday life. Listen out for his assessment of the differences between life in Britain and his native Cripple Creek.

Lock's show comes from Edinburgh and last Saturday featured a very fine spoof country singer called Wilson Dixon (the Australian comic Jesse Griffin in real life, but since one has not heard of him either the point is moot), which is reason enough to seek it out on Listen Again.
