Born in Wigan as George Hoy Booth, Formby was the son of music hall comedian James Booth who performed with the stage name George Formby. Formby Jr. took up his father's act after his early death, and rose in a little over 10 years to be a national superstar as an actor, comedian and ukulele/banjolele player. Starring in a string of hugely successful films during the 1930s and 40s, he was a favourite with troops during the Second World War and became the UK's highest-paid entertainer.
