The First Team

The First Team

Pre-order. DVD

The new BBC comedy from the makers of The Inbetweeners, The First Team follows the off-the-pitch escapades of three young football players - Mattie, Benji and Jack - as they find themselves struggling with their mercurial Italian manager Cesare, the team's eccentric American Chairman, resident hard-man Petey Brooks and ineffectual coach Chris Booth. All whilst living in fear of Olivia, their team's press manager, who can make or break them.

This series hasn't been getting great ratings, but for our money has some really good laughs, and is very accessible to all - even your football-hating correspondent thoroughly enjoys the series, whilst a football-obsessive friend has fallen for the sitcom big time. Greed

Greed

Pre-order. DVD, Blu-ray

Greed tells the story of self-made British billionaire Sir Richard McCreadie (Steve Coogan), whose retail empire is in crisis. For 30 years he has ruled the world of retail fashion - bringing the high street to the catwalk and the catwalk to the high street - but after a damaging public inquiry, his image is tarnished. To save his reputation, he decides to bounce back with a highly publicised and extravagant party celebrating his 60th birthday on the Greek island of Mykonos.

A satire on the grotesque inequality of wealth in the fashion industry, the film sees McCreadie's rise and fall through the eyes of his biographer, Nick (David Mitchell). It's already available to buy-to-download, if that's your thing.

Can they all pull it off in order to grab the cash?

Julia Davis & Vicki Pepperdine - Joan & Jericha: Why He Turns Away - Do's And Don'ts From Dating To Death

Julia Davis & Vicki Pepperdine - Joan & Jericha: Why He Turns Away - Do's And Don'ts From Dating To Death

Pre-order. eBook, Hardback

Julia Davis and Vicki Pepperdine resume the guises of Joan and Jericha, their spoof agony aunt podcast characters, for this new book of advice. The counselling duo write:

"We dedicate this tome to Mahmoud, surgeon, prophet, model and friend, whose long hands guided us, whose cinnamon whispers soothed us, whose hot nose nudged us until this book was finally birthed, proud and powerful. Much like the man himself. This golden man is not simply an outstanding surgeon, capable of performing up to 30 hysterectomies a day (often blindfolded), but is, in his own right, a visionary, a soothsayer, a chosen one.

"What we offer here is a lifeline, a service, much like the NHS, or perhaps more accurately, the AA. Joan and Jericha: AA for the heart. Affording you the opportunity to have a breakdown, call for a pick-up truck, stop off for a Full English whilst a hairy guy in a grubby onesie fumbles under your bonnet and tweaks at your wiring, before sending you on your way, lubricated, primed, pumped and pretty."

Stewart Francis - Into The Punset

Stewart Francis - Into The Punset

Out now. Download, Audiobook, Audio Download

In December 2019, Stewart Francis said goodbye to stand-up - and with it a 20-year career in comedy - with his tour Into The Punset. The tour sold-out a multitude of venues across the UK and Ireland over the best part of two years, before an emotional finale at London's Eventim Apollo last Christmas. Now, thanks to the power of technology, one of these performances is being streamed.

As always, Stewart had the crowd rolling in the aisles with his unique brand of punmastery and hugely hilarious one-liners, and the standing ovation at the end was typical of the tour as a whole - which in turn reflected the wealth of admiration (even love) for a giant who had stomped triumphantly across the comedy stage for decades.

Julie Warren - It's All In The Mind: The Life And Legacy Of Larry Stephens

Julie Warren - It's All In The Mind: The Life And Legacy Of Larry Stephens

Out now. eBook, Hardback

British popular culture would probably be very different had Larry Stephens not been born. We could now be living in a world without the Carry On films or Monty Python, and we may never have heard of Tony Hancock, Peter Sellers or Spike Milligan.

Stephens's promising career as a jazz pianist was interrupted by the war, and after serving as an officer with the commandos he moved to London and struck up a friendship with Tony Hancock, becoming the sole writer of his stage material. Hancock introduced him to Peter Sellers, Harry Secombe, Spike Milligan and Michael Bentine, and together they created The Goon Show - arguably the world's most influential comedy programme.

As one of the main writers throughout its nine-year run, Stephens's experiences and acquaintances became themes and characters within the show. For the first time, the life and work of this unsung hero of British comedy has been thoroughly explored.
