David Mitchell - Dishonesty Is The Second-Best Policy: And Other Rules To Live By

David Mitchell - Dishonesty Is The Second-Best Policy: And Other Rules To Live By

Pre-order. Paperback

David Mitchell's best-selling Thinking About It Only Makes It Worse, published back in 2014, must really have made people think - because everything's got worse. We've gone from UKIP surge to Brexit shambles, from digging up Richard III to breaking up fatbergs, from Big Society to food banks, from twerking to stabbing.

It's probably socially irresponsible even to try to cheer up. But if you're up for it all the same, why not dive into this brilliantly observed and witty analysis of the farce of recent years? As facts are downgraded to opinions, as customers are preyed upon by algorithm-wielding websites, voters by targeted lies, cinema-goers by superheroes and children by measles, David Mitchell negotiates a path between the commercialisation of Christmas and the true spirit of Halloween.

No other writer is better placed to take on the dumbfounding times we live in.

Louis Barfe - Happiness And Tears: The Ken Dodd Story

Louis Barfe - Happiness And Tears: The Ken Dodd Story

Pre-order. Paperback

In this, the first serious biographical assessment of Ken Dodd since the death of the feather duster-wielding Liverpudlian in spring 2018, respected historian of British light entertainment Louis Barfe charts the life and extraordinarily long comedic career of a man whose career straddled the very tail end of variety and the golden age of television comedy.

When Dodd died, social media divided into two camps: those who wondered what all the fuss was about, and those who had seen him in live performance. Barfe argues that Dodd was the last of the great variety acts, a creator of superb absurd vulgarity who was at his best not on the small screen but on stage, where his act - 'a rolling boil of cumulative humour' - delighted his audiences across seven decades.

This is the definitive life of the man called 'the last great music-hall entertainer', and a true British eccentric, who beat his audiences into submission with stand-up shows that stretched into the wee small hours of the morning.

Steve Pilkington - Monty Python: The Complete Guide

Steve Pilkington - Monty Python: The Complete Guide

Out now. Paperback

Everyone has their favourite Monty Python sketches, often quoted almost verbatim, whether it is 'the Parrot Sketch', 'the Cheese Shop' or 'Blackmail' - amongst many others. Likewise the Python films, the mere mention of which might solicit quotes like "'Tis but a flesh wound" or "He's not the Messiah, he's a very naughty boy". But what lies beyond these well-remembered favourites?

How many remember the 'Fresh Fruit Self Defence' sketch, or 'the Fish-Slapping dance'? Or even such almost-forgotten curios as 'Blancmanges Playing Tennis', 'The Olympic Hide And Seek Final' and 'The Batley Townswomen's Guild Re-enacting Pearl Harbour'? This book shines a light on all of these often-hilarious - but occasionally misfiring - curios.

As well as the films and all 45 TV episodes, the record albums are also analysed for their content and how they differed from the TV show, as well as the books. How did Python come to be, what tensions were there between its stars, and what was the atmosphere like when the crew reunited to make the films long after they had left their TV show days behind them?
