The Strange World Of Gurney Slade... Again

The Strange World Of Gurney Slade... Again

Pre-order. Blu-ray

On 22nd October 1960 renowned singer and actor Anthony Newley crashed through the fourth wall in surreal, genre-breaking ATV series The Strange World Of Gurney Slade. To celebrate its 60th birthday all six episodes have been restored in HD from the original 35mm film elements and are now available to order on a limited edition Blu-ray release, packed full of rare special features.

The series saw Newley star as an actor who walks off the set of a banal sitcom and into a fantasy world of his own imagination, in a dreamlike odyssey through one man's personal alternative reality. Talking to dogs, rocks and fairies and dancing with vacuum cleaners it is an unpredictable, absurdist fantasy created by Newley and written by comedy legends Sid Green and Dick Hills (soon thereafter to become key writers for Morecambe & Wise). The series features British comedy stalwarts including Una Stubbs, Anneke Wills, Geoffrey Palmer and Bernie Winters.

Comedy troupe Peepolykus star in their own BBC Radio 4 sketch show, creating eight riotous reboots of literary classics. A pair of sailors, hiding out on a deserted island, are discovered by a long-forgotten castaway and his Spanish manservant. The Goodies

The Goodies

After the heart-breakingly early death of Goodies legend Tim Brooke-Taylor earlier in the year, the trio's eponymous, iconic television sitcom turned 50 years old yesterday. A child of At Last The 1948 Show and The Frost Report like Monty Python's Flying Circus before it, the series exploded onto BBC2 at 10pm on 8th November and comedy never looked back. Running for 9 series (including a final spell on ITV), and spawning a phenomenon in spin-off novelty musical records at the genius creation of Bill Oddie, it was ignored by the BBC for many decades but is now available to own, discover and enjoy in its entirety once more. This is the legendary series that literally killed a man from laughing so much. Check it out.
