Beggar My Neighbour
Originating as a Comedy Playhouse pilot first broadcast during this week in 1966, this popular sitcom followed next-door neighbours Gerald Garvey and Harry Butt, whose wives are sisters. Initially starring Peter Jones as underpaid middle-class snob Gerald with Reg Varney as well-off manual labourer Harry, it was a comedy of class, family, marriage and rivalry. The two wives were played by the excellent June Whitfield and Pat Coombs, and the first two of three series were produced by David Croft. Sadly much of the show is now missing, but what survives is a prime DVD release candidate. Guide |
