Channel Five commissions greasy spoon sitcom

Five and Paramount Comedy have commissioned Bwark Productions to produce a six-part sitcom called Angelo's. Set in a greasy spoon cafe in London, the comedy will follow the ups and downs of the everyday life of its staff and customers.

Written by Sharon Horgan (writer and star of BBC3's Pulling, pictured), Angelo's will form part of a 'comedy zone' on Channel Five which the broadcaster will be launching in the autumn.

Five's controller of comedy Graham Smith said the show promises to be "a comedic Full English, as our mis-matched visitors to Angelo's cafe all plot their escape to greater things".

Horgan has not only written the show but she'll also be starring in it. She will play Karen, a police officer who is desperate for a baby, so desperate in fact that if her PC husband Dave (Paul Garner) isn't up to the task she'll happily take up the offer of help from Dave's sleazy brother Kevin (Paul Kaye).

Other characters in the cafe include owner Angelo (played by Steve Brody), his 19 year-old daughter and wannabe X-Factor winner Maria (Shelly Longworth) and her best friend Alicia (Alice Lowe). The customers include a mini cab driver called Shelly (Miranda Hart) who makes her passengers listen to love songs because she is looking for 'the right man' and a mime artist called Kris who is covered head-to-doe in gold (played by Simon Farnaby).

Angelo's will be on Channel Five and the Paramount Comedy channel this Autumn.
