Green Wing writers create US pilot comedy

Tuesday 30th January 2007, 9:01am

American TV network ABC has picked up Green Wing creator Victoria Pile's new pilot series. The untitled half-hour comedy pilot is about the colourful characters who inhabit a police precinct in America.

Pile (pictured) has written the half-hour episode with some of the other Green Wing writers. The team first worked together on the hit Channel 4 sketch show 'Smack the Pony' before joining up to again in 2004 to create 'Green Wing', the popular hospital based ensemble comedy. The last episode of Green Wing broadcast on the 4th January 2007.

This commissioning news is somewhat of a rarity; it isn't often that British writers deliberately pitch a series to the American market first. The move would appear to be an attempt by the production team to bring the unique combination of sketch, sitcom and drama that they perfected with Green Wing to a mass US audience. The series also gives the writers an opportunity to create some new characters that are as funny and odd as the East Hampton Hospital staff.

Victoria Pile will be the Executive Producer for the pilot which is to be made by CBS Paramount Network Television. If the pilot pleases ABC a full season will be written and produced.

Meanwhile Pile and some of the other Green Wing writers are in talks with Channel 4 to create a spin-off series from Green Wing. Details are currently secret however it is understood C4 are keen to progress with the idea.

The British Sitcom Guide will be interviewing the writers shortly so stay tuned for more details. Fans have till Monday 5th February 2007 to submit questions.
