  • British comedic talent submitted their gags for the range through a BCG Pro contest

Greetings card marketplace thortful has launched a new range of cards with British Comedy Guide.

With government statistic showing that late September and early October is the time of year with the highest concentration of birthdays, thortful teamed up with BCG earlier in the summer to offer BCG Pro members the opportunity to submit their own comic slogans to be turned into a new range of cards available for sale.

September 24th, 25th and 26th have the most births of any other dates during the year - meaning British parents are most likely to conceive on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day or Boxing Day.

Northampton-based comedy writer Dave Hefford was chosen by thortful as their favourite entry, with the gag:

This card is not late. It is just socially distanced from your birthday. Hope it was a good one!

He said: "I'm excited to think people will receive (and hopefully have a laugh at) a card I've designed. My son is usually late with cards so I may get this one from him! There are lots of great cards up there so proud to be included."

He added: "I've been a member of BCG for several years but recently took advantage of the reduced Pro Membership fees to test out what was on offer. I've made 10 times the annual fee in the first month - if that happens every month I will be very pleased!"

Dozens of entries were submitted by BCG Pro members, with a further three runners-up also chosen. Each of the four will receive ongoing royalties for any sales of their card, whilst Dave receives a £250 cash prize, and the other three winners £100 each.

Perry Wilsher from Nottingham was chosen as the second favourite with his gag:

You are ageing just like a fine wine... Full bodied and very overrated.

He says: "I am chuffed to bits to be a runner up...it's such a nice thought that somebody might actually buy a card I have created, that I am tempted to offer to deliver it by hand!"

Third place went to a caption submitted by Newcastle resident Lizzy Mansfield:

THIS IS NOT A CARD. I just ironed a tiny ghost

She says: "I'm thrilled to have a nugget of my humour in print, and hope this opportunity will open many more doors in the highly competitive greetings card industry."

The final runner-up is London's Zoë Browne, for:

So you're 50? Stop whining and get the wine in!

She quips: "I'm chuffed to bits I got chosen!"

All four cards are now available to buy and send through thortful.com
