Adam Buxton is to provide a comic voiceover for a new Channel 5 gameshow set in a library. Contestants must aim to keep quiet and avoid laughing whilst carrying out silly challenges.

Buxton - best known as part of double-act Adam & Joe - will narrate the six-part series, which will air on digital channel 5* from next month.

Silent Library, which is based on a format that has run on Japanese TV for over 20 years, involves six friends undertaking a series of extreme games in a library setting. If the contestants can avoid making any noise they win a cash prize.

The series is being produced by Roughcut TV, the company behind Sky's forthcoming supermarket-set sitcom Trollied and sitcom pilots such as The Amazing Dermot. Ash Atalla - the producer of The Office and The IT Crowd - is overseeing the UK remake.

Over 1,000 episodes of the original Japanese game have been played, and the format has also been re-created in various other countries too. Here is a clip from the American version...

The production team are currently looking for contestants to take part in the show. They say: "Do you think libraries are dull? Can you suppress your laughter and hold your nerve whilst all those around you are losing theirs? Do you want to win up to £2000 in cash? We are currently producing a new TV series for Channel 5 based on a cult Japanese game show. We are looking for fearless, game for a laugh, up-for-it teams of six mates for a TV challenge like no other... Do you think you can avoid cracking up in the face of physically challenging, irresistibly silly pranks in the one place where the universal rule of SILENCE applies - a library?" Application form

Silent Library starts on 5* on 12th July at 10pm.
