E4 has ordered a second series of Misfits, its critically acclaimed new comedy drama about five young outsiders on community service who get caught in a strange storm and discover that they have developed supernatural abilities.

The news of a second series comes as no surprise, as Misfits blazed on to E4 earlier this year and rapidly became one of the most talked about television series of the Autumn. Hailed by The Telegraph as "one of the year's best comedies on E4" and "brilliant, sharp and funny" by the Guardian, the series has averaged over 1m views per episode, across E4 and 4oD.

Head of Drama Camilla Campbell says "Misfits always felt like a perfect E4 show and the response has been phenomenal. I'm delighted to commission a second series, and like its fans, I can't wait to see where Howard's inventive scripts take us and the gang."

Howard Overman will write 6 new 60 minute episodes. Channel 4 says: "While storylines are firmly under wraps, one thing's for sure, there's still no danger of E4's young offenders saving the world anytime soon."

Overman adds: "As a writer there is always the worry that people won't get what you're trying to do, love the characters as much as you, or indeed find them half as funny. The fact that audiences have taken to them so enthusiastically, is enormously exciting as it now gives me the opportunity to expand on the world which we have set up. I had always storyboarded for future series and am thrilled E4 wants us to continue providing some more dark, twisted, storm charged, Misfits style superhero capers. But without the capes obviously."

Misfits Series One comes to a close on E4 tonight at 10pm. The series will be available on DVD from the 28th December. Pre-order for £12
