Adrian Edmondson is to star in Royal Shakespeare Company's new version of Twelfth Night.

The Shakespearean comedy, believed to have been written around 1601, centres on twins Viola and Sebastian, who are separated in a shipwreck. Viola, disguising herself as a man under the name Cesario, enters the service of Duke Orsino. The Duke loves a woman called Olivia, however Olivia falls in love with 'Cesario'.

The star of Bottom and The Young Ones will take on the role of Malvolio, the steward of Olivia's household who despises all manner of fun and wishes his world to be completely free of human sin.

Twelfth Night, directed by Christopher Luscombe, will run at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon from November 2017 to February 2018.

The play will also star Kara Tointon as Olivia, Dinita Gohil as Viola and Nicholas Bishop as Orsino.

The cast list also features John Hodgkinson as Sir Toby Belch, Vivien Parry as Maria, Esh Alladi as Sebastian, Michael Cochrane as Sir Andrew Aguecheek, Beruce Khan as Feste, Verity Kirk as Parlour Maid, Joseph Prowen as Footman and Sarah Twomey as Fabia.

Christopher Luscombe says: "The great challenge of Twelfth Night is to reconcile its melancholy and joyful elements. I'm delighted to say that we've found an exceptional cast who, I believe, can do full justice to the play's dazzling emotional range. I can't wait to start work with them."

The play will run from the 2nd November 2017 to 24th February 2018, with the performance on the 14th February streamed live to cinemas around the country.
