It has been confirmed that Miranda Hart will star in the new West End version of Annie.

The comedy star will play the tyrannical Miss Hannigan in the show, from when it opens in May until 17th September.

Set in 1930s New York during The Great Depression, the musical observes as brave young Annie is forced to live a life of misery at Miss Hannigan's orphanage. Her luck soon changes when she's chosen to spend a fairytale Christmas with famous billionaire, Oliver Warbucks. Meanwhile, spiteful Miss Hannigan has other ideas and hatches a plan to spoil Annie's search for her true family...

This will be the West End debut for Hart. It has been described as a 'dream' role for the comedian, who knows every part in the show having been a long time fan of the story. Writing on Twitter this afternoon, she said: "It's still a surprise for me! Can't wait."

The producers say: "With its Tony award-winning book and score, including the unforgettable songs It's The Hard-Knock Life, Easy Street and Tomorrow - this is a show not to be missed!"

The musical will run at the Piccadilly Theatre. Preview performances are set to start from the 23rd May 2017. Tickets go on general sale on Monday 27th February, but they can already be bought via Ticketmaster
