The premise of the show is simple: once upon a time when you took a classic book from the shelf it always opened at the well-thumbed mucky bits. Well Thumbed is outrageous stand-up literature, as one man enthusiastically thumbs through the contents of a respectable library in a show that will have Mary Whitehouse spinning in her chastity belt. Warning: this libertine and ribald celebration contains historically robust language and subject matter. Jane Austen's dirty bits will be riffled for your pleasure. It's bawdy, educational, shocking, entertaining, delightful, charming, licentious, risqué, salacious, witty, naughty, wicked and breath-taking.

Stand-up literature: classic books with the clean bits taken out.

"A show, I imagine, that would have Mary Whitehouse spinning in her chastity belt." - Arts Scene in Wales

Once upon a time when you took a classic book from the shelf it always opened at the well-thumbed mucky bits... That's all the excuse that's needed for some outrageous stand-up literature. Conceived and performed by actor (& lexicographer*) Terry Victor, and played for laughs and gasps, it somehow manages to squeeze the work of more than 70 great writers into less than hour.

"Terry Victor is one of life's larger than life characters, out of the Brian Blessed mould. He has a quick wit and a sharp delivery." - Theatre in Wales

Well Thumbed is a libertine and ribald celebration that contains historically robust language & subject matter. Our libraries will be defended and Jane Austen will be riffled.

"So if you're aged 14 and up and want to laugh your a*se off, this show is definitely for you." - Fringe TheatreFest reviews

Performances are illustrated with a pop-up exhibition of irreverent author portraits-in-oil by Carl Chapple, the artist-in-residence at the Machynlleth Comedy Festival.

* A Dictionary of Rhyming Slangs by Lillo & Victor will be published by De Gruyter on August 7th. Terry Victor is one of the 'experts' on BBC Radio 5Live's Words & Grammar phone-in.

User reviews

As Well Thumbed is a one-man show - and I am that one - I would like instead to rate and review the Well Thumbed audiences. They are probably the best Fringe audiences to have been seen all festival. They may be small but they are oh so tasteful, full of laughter (from chortle and gurgle, to whispery snickering and silly giggling) and willing to share the emotional requirements of their most intimate appetites.
Honestly, it is hard to fault their good taste in stand-up literature. As to their intelligence: well, Well Thumbed audiences manage to find Venue 375, say no more. So, all in all, hurrah! Five stars (at least) in every house!
