Madame Señorita answers 10 Edinburgh Fringe Questions

Paula Valluerca

Paula Valluerca, aka Madame Señorita, answers our 10 Fringe questions.

1. Tell us about your career so far. Are you happy with where you're at?

My training lasted a looong time!

I did acting for the stage in Spain, specialised in Creating Theatre and Performance in London (Lecoq, LISPA) and now I am always involved in clown workshops lead by my favourite teachers: Mick Barnfather, John Wright and the master Phillipe Gaulier, the last workshop I attended was Clowning in Nature, where Philip Burgers (aka Dr. Brown) taught a five-day workshop in Wales, in a stunningly beautiful scenario surrounded by mountains and sheep. (I love singing to the sheep with all my heart when I am alone!)

In terms of work, I think I have taken part in the most unusual productions ever, all of them so different to each other and sometimes, quite bizarre. For example, I was directed by Adam Morley (Newsrevue) in a Lorquian Tragedy (pretty weird, innit?), one year after I would be flying on a harness down the ceiling of The Coliseum Theatre, as part of an opera, The Pearl Fishers, and at the same time I was doing theatre in education for kids that were studying Spanish all over the UK. Interestingly, out of the 5 characters I was in that play, most of them were men. (Another interesting fact of my career!) If this was not enough, I was also clowning around trying new games with audiences across all the London cabarets that would have me on their bill, in order to develop Madame Señorita and her stupidity.

2. Describe your show in exactly 23 words.

It's surreal, funny, filled up with unexpected moments and created to seduce the audience! Coming with your mind wide open will help you.

3. Why are you putting yourself through this famously stressful experience?

Surprisingly, I wouldn't describe my experience last year as a stressful one! It was very fun, filled with moments of crisis and doubt of course, but very positive altogether. Viva Madame Senorita 2015!

4. Any cunning plans to get more punters in?

Last year I met lots of people while jamming in The Meadows with other performers and it was a really nice way to talk to people about what I do. I would love to do that again. After a hectic Fringe day, It was so nice to just sit in the grass and improvise with music. Eventually those passing by would join us. It felt a very natural way to talk to them about my work and invite them to see my show. At the end of the day, the Fringe is all about meeting people, being open and ready for anything, and bringing my best, most positive energy to Edinburgh!

5. How much money do you think you'll lose/make this year?

I hope to make enough money to break even and to not have to take cash out for the whole festival. Fingers crossed!

6. What's your weirdest past Fringe experience?

At a variety night organised by my friend Tessa Watters (WOMANZ) at the Underbelly, my boob got tangled up with a string of my bra, I had to make the whole act about that, because I couldn't just pretend that nothing had happened!

7. What other shows are you hoping to see?

I love clowning! So I am looking forward to watching Dan Lees's Brainchild at Underbelly, the very sexy Brickhead at Cowgatehead, and Maawan Rizwan's FLUU at Pleasance Courtyard.

8. If you took over programming a venue, what would you perfect line-up of comedians be?

Christeene the Machine
Dr. Brown
Intuitive Creatures
Carlo Jacucci
Adrienne Truscott's Asking for It
Brickhead
Dan Lees
Katie O'Brien
Madame Señorita (of course!)

9. Name the one person you'd rather not bump into during the festival.

I wouldn't like to bump into my mum and dad, there are some moments of the life of a child their parents should never witness!

10. Why should audiences pick your show over the 1,700+ other comedy offerings at this year's festival?

There are two potential reasons:

1) Because at the end of the show everyone feels uplifted and empowered.
2) Because I give happy pills and a ticket to the moon at the end?

'Madame Señorita: ¿Eres Tú?' is at 12:45am at The Counting House on 6-16, 18-27, 29-30 August. Listing
