2015 Edinburgh Fringe

Joe Rowntree answers 10 Edinburgh Fringe Questions

Joe Rowntree

Comedian Joe Rowntree is back at the Fringe this year with his second show, in character as Morgan Berry.

1. Tell us about your career so far. Are you happy with where you're at?

I did my first ever gig in 2000 when I was 17 then took a short break of 2 years until the next one. I used to work behind the bar of a comedy club in South East London where I got a real taste of what being a comedian was all about. I started off my career writing put-downs for Anne Robinson on The Weakest Link. It took me 7 years to become a professional comedian and in that that time I hosted 2 UK tours of Brainiac Live which culminated at the Hammersmith Apollo after appearing in all six series of the Sky 1 show Brainiac: Science Abuse and more recently recorded a spot on Dave's One Night Stand. In 2013, I performed my first character show: Joe Rowntree is a Bit of a Character at the Edinburgh Festival and in 2014 I returned to the Festival with my a brand new character act, Morgan Berry: Pet Bereavement Counsellor. This year Morgan Berry returns to Edinburgh as part of his first ever UK Bereavement Tour with Morgan Berry: Watership Down. I am very happy with where I am right now and have so much more fun performing a character. I feel it allows more artistic and creative freedom than being a stand-up.

2. Describe your show in exactly 23 words.

A unique and original concept, high energy, audience participation, chanting, human sacrifices, a tambourine, pet bereavement counselling, freedom healing, car washes and rabbits!

3. Why are you putting yourself through this famously stressful experience?

I have been coming to the Festival since 2006 and every year I've learnt how to make the experience more fun and less stressful. By doing the Free Fringe it takes away all the stress and pressure of having to sell tickets and knowing you will have an audience is certainly something that gives you hope. In 2010, I got facial alopecia from all the stress. I currently have a full fertile facial crop and aim to keep it that way.

4. Any cunning plans to get more punters in?

This year I have filmed a few video clips of my character at the 2015 London Pet Show advertising the show and hope to use them to garner a bit more attention. I think the way people look for shows has changed over the years so hope to connect to an audience online as well as on the street.

5. How much money do you think you'll lose/make this year?

By doing the Free Fringe costs can be kept quite low and in the last 3 years I have managed to cover all my costs of accommodation, flyers and food and also make money as well. So if I can come away with at least £1,000 in profit I will be happy!

6. What's your weirdest past Fringe experience?

One moment that will always stand out for me was when I saw a man busking, I guess you could call him a mime act. He had a crowd around him clapping, as he proceeded to cover his entire face in Rizla papers whilst shouting out 'Bird Face!'

7. What other shows are you hoping to see?

I am really excited about seeing as much character/sketch-based comedy this year. I am looking forward to seeing Adam Riches, Max and Ivan, Milo McCabe performing Troy Hawke and Tom Binns. My favourite thing about the Fringe is on my day off, going to as many free shows as I can and unearthing a hidden gem.

8. If you took over programming a venue, what would you perfect line-up of comedians be?

Dr Brown, Steve Coogan, Paul Whitehouse, Johnny Vegas, Kevin Eldon, Chris Lilley, Reginald D. Hunter with Python closing.

9. Name the one person you'd rather not bump into during the festival.

My PR from 2010, they still owe me money!

10. Why should audiences pick your show over the 1,700+ other comedy offerings at this year's festival?

As Morgan Berry would say: "If ancient wisdoms, tribal rituals and laughter therapy is your thing then come along and see me. Think of how satisfied you feel after you visit the car wash! You feel great right, and so does the car. That's how I will make you feel! Inside and Out! Even if you haven't lost a pet, come see me at 6pm and I will set you free! Love Morgan"

'Morgan Berry: Watership Down' is at 6pm at The Banshee Labyrinth on 8-9, 11-16, 18-23, 25-30 August. Listing
