Angela Barnes answers 10 Edinburgh Fringe Questions

Angela Barnes

Angela Barnes answers our 10 quick-fire Fringe questions.

1. Tell us about your career so far. Are you happy with where you're at?

I started doing comedy in 2010, when I was 33. I used to run gigs in Brighton before that, so was involved in that world a bit. I am very much enjoying the ride when it comes to stand-up. This is a career I never expected to have and feel very lucky to have. I regularly have to pinch myself...I'm dead chuffed with where I've got to in 5 years, and am looking forward to seeing what comes next.

2. Describe your show in exactly 23 words.

Come As You Are is about me. And you. But mostly me. And my flaws. And has jokes in it. Amongst other things.

3. Why are you putting yourself through this famously stressful experience?

Because I want to be a better comedian. The Edinburgh Festival is like Boot Camp, and nobody comes out of it a worse comedian than they went in.

4. Any cunning plans to get more punters in?

Nope. I want people to come if they'd like to see my show. I shall put my fate in the hands of brilliant flyerers, doing a job that I would be utterly crap at.

5. How much money do you think you'll lose/make this year?

Enough. Or not enough.

6. What's your weirdest past Fringe experience?

Christopher Timothy, who played James Herriot in All Creatures Great and Small came to my show last year, and stayed behind to tell me how much he enjoyed it. I am a huge fan of ACGAS, so was utterly dumbstruck.

7. What other shows are you hoping to see?

SO MANY. The ones I have on my list so far is not exhaustive but includes: Sofie Hagen, Milo McCabe, Sean McLoughlin (he clashes with me, but am hoping he will do extra shows so I can catch it), Mat Ewins, Lou Conran, Juliet Meyers, Funz And Gamez Tooz and Charlie Baker.

8. If you took over programming a venue, what would you perfect line-up of comedians be?

Linda Smith
Alan Carr
Mark Steel
Zoe Lyons
Jon Richardson
Emo Phillips
Johnny Vegas
(how many can I have...)
Robin Williams
Carey Marx
Phyllis Diller

9. Name the one person you'd rather not bump into during the festival.

The Grim Reaper. Which shouldn't need explaining...

10. Why should audiences pick your show over the 1,700+ other comedy offerings at this year's festival?

I would like them to pick it because they like the sound of it and because they think it might be up their street.
