Why vote's no laughing matter for Scottish stand-ups

If you're visiting the Edinburgh Fringe next month, you might expect comics to be cracking jokes about the referendum for Scottish independence, which takes place just weeks after the festival ends. But for many stand-ups it will be a case of, as the Scots say, haud yer wheesht on the subject. One funnyman from north of the border told me it has become "toxic" and there are even some No supporters among stand-ups who genuinely fear violence if they go public on how they will vote.

The Andrew Maxwell three minute interview

Andrew Maxwell is a chatty man - he talks at speed - but he's both funny and informed. He riffs on the weighty subjects of Scottish Independence, the Irish Potato Famine, sectarianism and his beloved Hibernian Football Club in a highly humorous, passionate manner. Agree or not, he knows what he's talking about. Martin Walker distils his chat with a true satirist.

More details

Returning for just 12 shows at this year's Fringe, the ever-charming and mischievous Andrew Maxwell brings Hubble Bubble as his offering for 2014 - and promises to provide his characteristic intelligence, observational humour and that putting-the-world-to-rights attitude which has made him a firm Festival favourite in previous years and earned him two nominations for the Fosters Edinburgh Comedy Award.

Maxwell recently presented Public Enemies, his own, hugely successful show on BBC Radio 4, which concerned itself with the lazy assumptions about four possible threats to British society: nationalism, the internet, drugs and the food industry.

Known for being on the cutting edge of comedy and for his social commentary, Maxwell's live shows have established him as a notable force on the stand-up circuit. On television, he presented BBC Three's Conspiracy Coach Trip, which discussed world issues such as the 7/7 bombings and UFOs, RI:SE (as the US correspondent), and was a regular guest on Irish TV's The Panel. He also appeared on numerous shows including The Secret Policeman's Ball, Live At The Apollo, Mock The Week, Have I Got News For You and Celebrity Juice, among many more.

Andrew is a co-founder of the Alps-based festival Altitude with Marcus Brigstocke, which, over the years, has featured some of comedy's biggest names including: John Bishop, Tim Minchin, Eddie Izzard, and Jimmy Carr.
