Fringe Review at The Stand Comedy Club

The Stand leads the way in comedy at the Fringe. It has its own feel and buzz and there's plenty of intelligent, different and old-favourite shows on offer.

More details

Following his 2012 sell out run, Andrew Doyle makes his triumphant return to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, Stand 4 from 30 July to 24 August with his brand new show Zero Tolerance.

We are in the age of tolerance. In other words, intolerance has become intolerable. Yet UKIP are thriving, extremists are granted airtime on mainstream television, and Jeremy Irons has warned that gay marriage will inevitably lead to father/son incest. To be fair, Boris Johnson said something very similar a few years ago, but everyone's forgotten about that because he has such a bright and whimsical haircut.

For the most part, such people have been dismissed as either evil, stupid, drunk, or a combination of all three. But now Andrew has decided to engage with their arguments and see where it takes him. What if there IS an agenda to see minorities take over the country? What if the government IS secretly negotiating with Al-Qaeda to impose Sharia law on its citizens? What if Norman Tebbit's fears of a "lesbian queen" taking the throne are valid, and not just the insane paranoia of a man who should have given up speaking out loud years ago?

Andrew's new show is a liberal's attempt to see things from the other perspective. Who knows? Maybe he'll even defect to the dark side. In either case, he'll give one heck of a show before he goes. We don't know what will happen in his future but we can guarantee stories, belly laughs and sharp wit for the audience.

Andrew was a finalist in the Leicester Square New Comedian of the Year Award 2010. He has since provided tour support for Scott Capurro and Shazia Mirza. He has performed two solo stand-up shows at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival: Andrew Doyle's Crash Course in Depravity, and Whatever It Takes, which transferred to the Soho Theatre in London last year. His other Edinburgh shows include Christie & Doyle's Axis of Evil (with Bridget Christie) at the Underbelly, Sex and Hugs and Forward Rolls (Five Pound Fringe) and The Holy Trinity (PBH Free Fringe). He was also the principal writer on the sketch show Pop Tarts at the Pleasance Courtyard.

He is currently Associate Writer at the Canal Café Theatre, London. His plays include Borderland (national tour for 7:84 Theatre Company, Scotland), Shamlet (King's Head, London), Cockfight (Canal Café Theatre, London), People of the City (Soho Theatre STARTS commission), Darker Side Down (Arad Goch Theatre, Aberystwyth), Jimmy Murphy Makes Amends (BBC Radio 4) and The Second Mr Bailey (BBC Radio 4). Borderland is published by Oberon Books.

He has also written a number of musicals, including: The World Must Be Peopled (Soho Theatre / Nabokov), and The House of Lady Babylon (Bad Physics Theatre). He is currently adapting Terry Pratchett's novel Soul Music for YMT, which will be produced later this year at the Rose Theatre in Kingston.
