2011 Edinburgh Fringe

BBC Comedy Masterclasses

BBC Comedy Writers' Workshop

The BBC has some Masterclasses coming up over the next couple of days at its Edinburgh Fringe venue that those interested in writing or performing comedy would likely find rather interesting.

Tickets to both events, which are hosted by Fred MacAulay, are free - just go to the BBC box office (at the BBC venue, corner of Potterow and Marshall Street) on the day to get your ticket.

To stand the best chance of obtaining a ticket it is suggested that you arrive at the BBC venue 30-60 minutes in advance of the start times listed below.

Here's more details on the two events:

The Business of Comedy: Wednesday 24th at 3pm

A fantastic opportunity for those aspiring to work in the industry to hear from some of the most successful and influential comedy producers, managers and executives.

The panel will include:
Rob Aslett (Group Finance Director, Avalon)
Henry Normal (Managing Director of Baby Cow)
Rab Christie (Creative Director of The Comedy Unit)
Sophie Taitt (The Comedy Unit)

Between them they have been involved in some of the best comedy produced in the last fifteen years, including The Thick of It, Alan Partridge, The Mighty Boosh, Harry Hill's TV Burp and Gary: Tank Commander so if you have any interest in breaking into the world of comedy (either behind or in front of the camera) then this is must-attend event.

Attendees to this Masterclass can also bring along a script or programme treatment and Mark Freeland, Head of BBC Comedy, will be taking time out to give feedback to 15 randomly selected hopefuls.

From Fringe to Screen: Thursday 25th August at 3pm

This session is a bit of a 'must' for anyone who wants to break into comedy performing.

The session will be an exciting mix of conversation, Q&A session, live performances and clips (including a montage of up-and-coming faces on the comedy circuit who have performed over the Fringe and will be appearing in the highly anticipated Life's Too Short including: Gareth Morinan, Eric Lampaert, Tim Key, Eri Jackson, Dustin Demri-Burns, Colin Hoult, Nick Mohammed, Caroline May Jones and Matthew Holness).

Comedy performers Isy Suttie (Peep Show, Whites), Miranda Hart (Miranda, Not Going Out), Tim Key (Life's Too Short), and sketch group Lady Garden (fresh from filming their BBC taster) will join producer Charlie Hanson (Extras, Life's Too Short) to discuss the journey from Fringe stage to TV screen. Featuring live performance, clips and an audience Q&A.
