NewsRevue again! Page 115

Both shows would be a bit edgier than Newsjack, especially NewsRevue. This blog helped me a good bit

Well done everyone who made it.

I've not done much lately but I was looking at a magazine the other day which could provide some inspiration. It's called "The Week" and issue 1,000 is on sale this weekend.

Haven't been keeping up with this but want to send something off this weekend who is the director and what is their email address?

@blahblah

A girl called Jess, so newsrevuejess@gmail.com.

Aargh! What happened to Ellie?

Cast and directors change every 5 weeks or so. Probably keeps it 'fresh' or something, not sure myself why

I used to get The Week for mrs JD as she felt that she should keep up to date with the news but didn't during the week - the closest she got was usually watching Mock the week/8 out of 10/HIGNFY.

It seemed a good overview of the weeks news, but is, IMO, too late for doing topical humour from it unless you're using it to get up to speed on an ongoing situation. The issue comes out around Friday/Saturday iirc, and covers the preceding weeks news. Most topical comedy outlets seem to be recorded/staged on Wed/Thurs onwards and seem to want news from something like Thursday-Tuesday. Obviously the issue of The Week you'd be working from might touch on the Thursday/Friday but is mainly covering news that is too old to be using for new material by the time you read it.

Okay - maybe out slightly with the days, but the general idea is: The Week is a decent read for catching up on the news, but too slow for using it as a main source for writing topical comedy.

BTW: Apologies if yours was a humourous post and I just didn't get it and so answered too seriously.

Cast and directors change every 5 weeks or so. Probably keeps it 'fresh' or something, not sure myself why

I'm not sure why either, but I'd imagine that it's quite knackering doing the run since they're replacing something like a third of the show each week, so there's always new material to write/learn/rehearse. I'd guess that's more effort than just running a single, essentially static, play for 6 weeks.

The change in tone can also keep it fresh for punters (assuming they get some people who return every run).

It may also help writers... some directors/cast may love your style/take and others might hate it. Changing the cast and crew means if you keep submitting decent material you'll (hopefully) find a team that like it, or at least you won't be stuck with someone who just doesn't like your stuff.

I write that as, whilst I've no idea what they actually thought of my material, as there's no feedback past being used or not, I got loads of material in 2014 run 1, then nothing in run 2 though for a few weeks I sent just as much material and had faith in what I sent. My (possibly incorrect) assumption is that the 2 directors had very different opinions of my style/tone. It could have put me off for good if I'd had months of a director that used nothing...

They only have short runs primarily because they are all jobbing actors and directors who do other things as well. For example, many NewRevue-ites have turned up in adverts or shows such as Casualty and Holby City. Oh, and many do stints of theatre work or stand-up too.

Oh, and yes, it keeps the show fresh. :)

Wishful thinking?

:D
