Year Of The Rabbit - Series 1 Page 2

Are you suggesting he should ditch Jane Plough?

Are you suggesting he should ditch Jane Plough?

That's quite witty, actually. Laughing out loud

To address the question, however, Matt Berry is certainly riding the crest of a popularity wave at the moment and I think we'll be seeing more of him before we begin to see less.

The more the Berrier, I say!

Episode 1 was an excellent opener to the series. A lot of laughs. Really looking forward to seeing the rest.

Haven't you seen part 2 yet? It's been available on catch up all week.

I believe they all have. I don't like to use catch up.

Episode 2 was good as well but I can't help feeling there is 'quota casting' going on.

A bit like this https://comedy5050.com/. (Accepting that C4 doesn't appear to be signed up to this - yet)

God! Not this again...

Well I'm still liking it. Not a classic I agree but has its moments like this week when the Elephant Man was giving the posh Strauss lessons in being a Cockney - thought that was quite funny.

Just checked it. I'm frankly speechless. I cannot believe...no, I'm just speechless...

Back on topic, I am really liking Matt Berry at the moment. His voice is fantastic.

"Year of the Rabbit" has more quality jokes per minute than most British sitcoms I've ever seen. I think the average viewer would need to watch each episode at least twice in order to catch and fully appreciate them all.

It's the comedic equivalent of drinking neat Ribena!

The problem is I just can't warm to it - the program that is, not Ribena.

Are there any likeable characters? Alun Armstrong's copper is a decent enough bloke, I suppose, but every other character appears to be just a device for moving the plot forward and/or being funny.

There should be more to sitcom than that.

I am enjoying it but you raise a very good point here Rood. Sometimes it takes a series to settle everything down.

It seems Year of The Rabbit has made Nigel Farage very angry, so that's another thing in its favour! https://www.chortle.co.uk/news/2019/06/30/43434/ban_this_totally_sick_comedy_scene%21

Sad old episode tonight. Maybe it has the makings of a long running show?

I'm enjoying it more as it goes on and am now intrigued as to what the Keeley Hawes character is up to - some naughty plotting going on there methinks.

In terms of production values, Year of the Rabbit is just superb: it's the equal of any British TV drama I've ever seen.

As I've mentioned before, the joke count is absolutely sky high: much of the dialogue is written deliberately to be "jokey" but a substantial amount of it is hilarious because it's so firmly rooted in character. The acting, as well, is of a high standard rarely seen in sitcom and serves to make the funny characters seem even funnier than they already are.

All in all, it's an absolutely brilliant sitcom but, as I've said before, it has a major fault for me personally because as I sit here watching it I'm continually waiting for the arrival of a character I can actually like and he/she has yet to arrive.
