Comedy TV advert classics

Heineken and Carling had been vying with each other to come up with the best adverts, which was great for us viewers, but at the end of the day I think the Black Label ads from Carling won the "contest" when they made the series with "The Oblivion Boys" - Stephen Frost and Mark Arden. And for me, the funniest and cleverest was this one:-

Quote;- "The ad was filmed at Pinewood Studios in London and has won three silvers, a gold and a black pencil at D&AD, and scooped Film Gold at Cannes Lions advertising festival the year it was made.

The line "I bet he drinks Carling Black Label", also used in an earlier 1984 ad for the brand, had originally been intended for use in a milk advertisement, but had been rejected."

Followed by the brilliant Old Spice crossover ad:-

I wonder how many takes it took for the surfer to get it right?

They were brilliant ad's, can't believe they were from 30 years ago.

The ones for Holsten Pils with Griff Rhys Jones were others that are worth a mention, and if you look them up on YouTube there are some on there by some Fast Show characters.

Don't remember seeing those, so maybe they were done for the cinema or for Europe ??

Ah yes, the Holstein ads - I'd forgotten about them, and like you can't remember the Fast Show ones, so you are probably correct. :)

No argument there :)

Yet the current ones are appalling. If I did drink the stuff I wouldn't drink it on principle.

We/They seem to have lost the touch making very funny adverts as they did in the 70s and 80s. :(

Why is it always crap beer (ie lager) that does the clever ads?

Those ads with the Welsh guy talking about cider were great.

You know the ones. The ones with the Welsh guy talking about cider.

By the way, the BBC should really make iPlayer available for foreign fans as well.

Too right. Ditto 4oD and the Channel 4 YouTube channel.

Can't watch 'em outside Blighty, which is a tad annoying.

If you're an expat.
