No, did not know it was considered offensive. In America its just an abbreviation of Pakistani. The offensive slang word here is Arab, which any people coming from a Muslim country are derogatorily classified as. And to a lesser extent calling them Indians is also offensive (both to people from the peninsula of India and to the aboriginals here).

Exactly why is it offensive? If I'm not supposed to say it I'd like to know its origin story.

It's just become a word used only as a slur by racists. I would say it was probably as offensive as someone in America (or anywhere) using the n word.

I saw it used in an American comic book about a decade ago and was shocked! So I'm not surprised to hear it's not known to be racist in the US.

Thanks for clearing that up. Learned something new and I totally welcome it. Considering how vocal I've been about blackface and its connotations, I'm more that willing to learn the appropriate social graces in the UK. I wasn't trying to be offensive so apologies to any who took it that way.

American comic books are notoriously racist and misogynist and somehow get away with it, especially stereotyping dress and speech mannerisms. (Check the site women in refrigerators for a comprehensive list of bad female characterizations.) IMHO the inferior representation of gender and race is a bit of a plot device to propel the hero of the book into his self-righteous quest for justice; a second gander at that point is to assume is all but obvious indoctrination on our societal youth at early ages. I wonder if terms like this are edited in foreign releases of books?

Uh, even I shudder when I say that word, it sounds too much like rapist, a thing almost as heinous as a racist. Unless you're from Rotherham Council or South Yorkshire Police ofcourse.

Yeah our bluff Prince Hal had a very awkward public image in his slightly younger days, he said that horrendously heinous word to his troops on top of a tank, after dressing as a Nazi and being seen smoking dope at a party, shagging some bird in a Vegas hotel room and throwing up in Eton High Street. I love the bloke. but there's no doubting the PC mob have him in their clutches now. 'Harry you have to marry a person of ethnic diversity to make up for your past indiscretions.' It's just the modern equivalent of what his ancestor Henry II had to do as penance for killing his archbishop.
