The all in one consolidated tennis thread

Who is this James Ward fellow?
He'll probably lose against Tonga in the Semis but he seems to have had a good run.

He is the British number 2.

Which means he's about 7 millionith in the world.

It always surprises me why we can't produce decent tennis players. We hold the premier tennis event in the world and indoor courts are just indoor courts. It not like the facilities are lacking.

Murray will have it tough against Roddick I think.

The Murray family aren't quite in the same league as the Williams family but they're the best we have.
Tsonga is good but erratic. Perhaps beating Rafa has taken it out of him? Ward probably has an excellent chance as virtually nothing is known about him so tactics will be almost impossible to decide until the match starts.
In the battle of the Andys? Depends. Roddick isn't the force that he once was and Murray leads on the head to head. The big issue that all the commentators tend to overlook is that Murray isn't a grass court specialist. He's much better on hard courts. That said, Murray has won at Queen's a couple of years back. And we know that he's carrying an injury.
Perhaps just watching the damn match rather than speculating might be more profitable.

Murray versus ?

Well I got that wrong !

Murray rampant

Tennis is my second favourite sport - but it is regarded as a bit girlie or one for the toffs. You never get a kid on a council estate wanting to be a tennis star do you.

Ward had a bad attack of pluck Brit syndrome and looked like he might possibly drag Tsonga to a third set but normal service was resumed.
Anyway, if he's not got a wildcard into Wimbledon, this week's exploits should get him one.

Not that I know much but I thought he'd have trouble against a whole island.

Quote from frankie Boyle -

"Andy Murray won the Queen's tennis tournament. He'll have a great chance of winning Wimbledon now if none of the other top players enter this either."

23-years-old and ranked number 4 in the world (formerly number 2). The lad should hang his head in shame and make a public apology to the people of Britain!

So Rafa's not a good player?

I think we produce a few decent ones, but not world class ones. I think GB has upped the profile of tennis when it badly needed to, but still probably can't compete with the tennis mad countries who pour a much bigger amount of their sports funding into it than us.

We have lots of little kids competitions now to get them interested. The Americans, Russians and a few other nations pull their kids out of school and give them top professional coaches by the age of 3! That is the big difference, we are still not really competing with the fanatical best.
