The gambling thread Page 30

After nearly two weeks without a bet (a personal record since the age of 13), we have the "virtual" Grand National on Saturday 5pm ITV1. All bookmakers donating profits to the NHS.

I wonder how a bookmaker defines 'profits' :D

Feel sorry for my dad who hasn't left the house for over two weeks as he usually goes out to play Kalooki three nights a week so can't do that for the foreseeable future and worse now there is no racing he can't spend time on Betfair at home. He's been playing the poker tournaments but he would much rather be working his magic on the nags. I joined Betfair last year but didn't follow up with the ID checks they needed so the account was closed. I should get it set up because the poker area is infinitely better than any other poker site in terms of odds of getting certain hands.

Anyone play poker? I use https://casinosnotongamstop.info/ sometimes when I want to lose all my money. Some of the hands I've seen dealt on that site are beyond belief. In the last 12 months I've had a royal flush, a few straight flushes and countless 4 of a kinds and the odds of that are probably billions to one. I love poker though and have been playing since I was a nipper. Games like Omaha, 7 stud and Razz are far more exiting than hold em.

I once strayed from the card room when I noticed Pokerstars had introduced a Casino area where you can play blackjack, slots and Roulette. Playing those kinds of games at home is one slippery slope I will never go near but I found myself trying out Roulette one Saturday night with a starting stack of $30USD and at my highest point about 10 hours later I had $720. I even used snipping tool to take a snapshot of that amount and if only I had stopped there. I had, of course been drinking endless beer while I was seeing the most amazing luck I have ever had at a Casino game. I have the same numbers I choose and they were coming in time after time. Double and treble stake bets were still coming in. I kept thinking it must be because I'm a first timer on the site and it's being generous but I can just stop when I start losing. My biggest mistake was hitting the Jack Daniels. I admit now like the fool I am that as soon as I poured some JD and started celebrating my win it disappeared in a fraction of the time I had spent building it up. I can just about remember my last two spins being around $180 each as I was trying to recover from consecutive losing spins. Then zilch. I can laugh about it now but at the time I was really miffed. I could have stopped at 500 but oh no.

Moral of the story - card room = good, casino = bad.

Gamblers are constantly trying to find the right, winning strategy for them. The most common and simple system, which applies to almost all gambling, is to double (or increase) the bet on loss. For example, you bet $ 1 and lose, bet $ 2 and lose, bet $ 4 and lose, bet 8 $ and lose, etc. According to statistics, losses cannot continue indefinitely, the chances of winning 1 time out of 10 are 99.9%. Any win brings a profit in one bet. And you can start all over again. A casino is not always a bad thing, the main thing is to find the right strategy

The statistical chances of winning 1 time out of 10 may well be 99.9%. However, using your "doubling-up" strategy, by the time you have lost nine times, you will have lost $511 and will need to risk $512 on your 10th bet. So your $1 initial stake has grown into a risk of $1,023. Just in an attempt to get your money back. And if that 10th bet should lose...

Be afraid, be very afraid.

If these strategies were true, there would be no bookies or casinos etc.
Odds are always worked out in their favour.
It's quite possible to make a profit from gambling - but not the double up method.

In the 60s, when there were casinos in virtually every town and city (we had two) I had a friend who had a roulette wheel system - I can't remember the exact details now, but through a combination of covering red or black and then columns etc. etc. and one number on the nose, you covered every number on the wheel; but of course UNLESS one of the high odds combos (or even the single number! Fat chance) came up you would gradually lose your money. It was something like an £8 layout (£1 chips**), and of course, if your colour came up, which is about all you are going to win, then you are £7 down each time.

**I remember this one club had half crown chips (2/6d or 12½p !!!) - hardly James Bond territory. :D

I do about 50 per cent coverage
the best advice is to have a set loss and gain limit and get out quick once in profit

A horse called Clitheroe runs 1.50 Goodwood today. No doubt much smaller than the average racehorse.
