In my opinion, comedy is so bad these days no one is great anymore. John Sullivan used to be the greatest but is now probably the worst.

I take your John Sullivan, and I raise you Ben Elton.

Ben Elton isn't funny anymore. You can see that from Blessed and Get a Grip. It's a good think he hasn't done anymore Thin Blue Line. Part of me wants him to, because it was so hilarious, but if he did more it would be very very bad because he is rubbish now. In 1996, when Thin Blue Line was still on, I would say yeah, he is a great writer/comedian. Not now, though.
