Greatest episode of Steptoe and Son Page 2

Not a clue. Was it? Not impossible - doesn't make any difference to me either way though, I must say. Funny's funny whether it's wholly original or not.

Couldn't agree more.

Either Oh What a Beautiful Mourning or Men of Letters (22 Down!) Divided We Stand is a little bit contrived. A Star is Born has some great one-liners ("the Alf Garnett chief...")

I have not seen any Steptoe & Son, and out of curiosity I started watching the first episode on YouTube. I only got about 10mins in before turning it off. It just did not seem at all funny, and was more of a drama than a comedy it seems. Both characters seemed quite nasty. Is this representative of the whole show? Should I try some of the episodes mentioned in this thread?

Don't judge it by the first episode, carry on watching, The first series is maybe my least favourite series, but trust me, it gets better and better.

You need to watch all 8 series and familiarise yourself with the characters. Albert is the greatest character of any sitcom ever IMO, and the 2 of them together are one of comedy's great double acts.

It's never been bettered.

I'm pretty sure The Complete Steptoe & Son will be the next DVD set I'll buy. No negative comment will hold me back. I've seen only one episode so far (the one with Leonard Rossiter) but I'll give it a try. I think it's the dark setting what's alluring to me.

Whoever's giving you negative comments can't be real people, because if they've seen it, they could only be impressed.
I know you're a big Only Fools And Horses fan, and I used to think I was the biggest OFAH fan until I bought Steptoe And Son about 2 years ago, it's number 1 in my opinion. I'm obsessed with it, it's what brought me to this site. I hope you get the box set, it will bring you so much joy.

Thanks. I'm sure I will enjoy it. But I'm not so sure yet if the Steptoes could possibly replace the Trotters as my favourite comedy family. :)

Whichever one was the one where the they split the house up with turnstyles etc.

In fact, looking through this thread, Divided We Stand, may well have been the episode title.

Indeed it is, Simon.

I think I will go for Divided We Stand as well. I think 65 Today would come a close second. Also loved Lead Man Cometh and Steptoe and Son and Son. The pilot episode "The Offer" has some very touching moments, Harry H Corbett is superb.

The one in which Harold puts his father in an old folks' home was very touching and memorable. (I have only seen the first three series so far.)

Best one for me has to be the one with the water bed. Harold in his 70s pulling gear cracks me up. Think it's also got a classic chase Albert around the room ending, which were fun. But the films are even better imo.

The one with the central heating was very funny. One of my faves so far...

My favourite episodes are Divided We Stand and Porn Yesterday A Star Is Born and The Bath.

Why am I the only one who thinks Divided We Stand is too contrived?

No one has said it isn't contrived.
I think it is contrived, but very well executed and hilarious with it . . .
