Dangerous fake email scams

This is a thread for posting details of fake emails & scams emails etc, of a type clever enough that might catch out an unwary member of BSG.

No point in posting examples of emails that are obvious fakes.

Just got this from Reports@jel.cc- at least other viruses have put the effort into a familiar looking address!

I had 2 of those fake order things a couple of months ago, but restrained myself from clicking the link - it would indeed be tempting because you worry that something HAS been ordered on your credit card.

I get these quite regular. If they ask for bank account / credit card details I always fill them in with a made-up one, just for the satisfaction of knowing they'll be disappointed.

Which is probably the reason you get them regularly, they know you are there.

D'Oh!

And those fake credit card details probably belong to someone. So, like, BLAM! Dude.

I got the Asian one today and just deleted it.

Unlikely. I can't even get 3 numbers on the lottery so there's no chance I'm going to guess the exact sequence of 16 numbers on a stranger's credit card. There'd be a lot more credit card crime if it were that simple!

But there are millions of credit cards, I think it's fairly possible for you to guess one by accident. Hope it's not mine you're giving out willy nilly!

Our system at work has been down for days due to a virus in an email

Well you worried me for a second Zooo but I checked and it just so happens that some geek's worked out what the chances of guessing someone's credit card number are. Basically if you assumed that everyone on Earth had six credit cards, (a total of 36 billion), I'd still only have about a 0.00000036% chance of guessing one correctly. Which is very, very small indeed. http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20081106135136AAT0e5m

Also if it were so easy to simply guess a random credit card number, how come the naughty criminals don't just do that instead of these elaborate scams? I rest my case m'lud!
