The original article made an interesting point which certainly holds true to an extent. However, there is no such think as a rape joke in the sense that there is say an Irish joke. There are jokes which reference rape which are acceptable and those which are not. And everyone will have their own views on particular jokes, part of this acceptability test being how the joke would be received by a potential rapist. Not all men are potential rapists, but perhaps all men are born with the potential to become rapists, depending on how their attitudes are shaped and reinforced. I suspect there are more powerful forces shaping society than stand-up comedy, and that female attitudes to their own feminity and to other females are significant in this respect, but any sort of reinforcement will play into the hands of those already predisposed.

I hope Jo's Friend A was brought up sharply by the reaction his views evoked when stated out loud to someone not inclined to humour him.

A minor extent though. Like I said - making rape jokes is no more to blame for rape happening than wearing a short skirt is.

I think I'd agree with that. Although Jo's said some interesting stuff about rape jokes.

To say, seriously, that women ask for it by wearing a short skirt is very odd. Do kids ask to be paedo'd by running around in those revealing nappies? Do people ask to be beheaded in supermarkets by bearing their necks so irresistably?

Yes it is, but that does not mean you should stand by while a rape is committed. There can sometimes be a moral cowardice is laughing along. The difficulty is in establishing your personal line, much harder than for say race, though there was a time when the foulest racial slurs would go unchallenged if dressed up as humour.

In evolutionary terms the female body is designed to arouse males, whether females consciously dress to enhance this effect is beside the point. I enjoy seeing females in short skirts; it is my responsibility to control my arousal. I do not want women to wear burquas, it is oppressive for them and deprives me of innocent leching. I suspect the attitude that women who dress provocatively are asking for it comes in large part from other women, who have a low opinion of male powers of self-control, and from religious types attempting to suppress their sexual urges.

Women should be forced to insure themselves against rape. Then, if just like my car, they leave the goods on display, and the back door unlocked after knocking back half a dozen pints of Stella it should invalidate their claim.

I dunno, I've seen at least 2 films where women effectively raped men! There was a Clint Eastwood film where he was tied up and I think the woman (a bad 'guy') said if she lost 'it' she'd kill him or something. Then there was another film with a female bodybuilder who'd date men and then at the end of the night, overpower them and do them with a strap on, which I thought was rather amusing. I mean she mistakenly thought they enjoyed it, but it was by no means consensual.

Plus I heard about a porn film that was banned because a man was blindfolded and another woman had sex with him, when he thought he was having sex with his wife, which apparently was technically rape, hence the ban.

Then in real life there was a case of a woman allegedly forcing a man to sleep with her under threat of being sacked, I'm not sure what happened in that case...

Lastly, if a man can be accused of, if not convicted of, rape for having sex with a woman who was too drunk to remember giving consent, then surely if the situation was reversed and the woman initiated things and went on top, and the man was too drunk to remember consenting, then that should also be considered rape. Though I don't think it'd be rape in either case.
