Rape jokes

Not sure where to put this, but I read this article which I found very thought provoking, if terrifying.

I always go to Sainsbury's for the rape.

I prefer olive oil but it's too expensive.

What was the joke?

Is that the extra virgin?

I considered that joke

What was the joke?

If it's supposed to be funny, then I'm missing it!

I just thought it was interesting, particularly in regards to a lot of the recent discussions about Frankie Boyle, taste, sick jokes etc.

Do many people tell rape jokes? What exactly is a rape joke? "How many rapists does it take to change a light bulb?"? (*scratches around for joke based on screw and bayonet fittings and thinks better of it*)

Yes the fine line between eschewing suffocating political correctness and normalising social evil needs to be trod with care, but most people who are not dickheads have got that one by the time they leave the playground.

To be honest I try to avoid them (*shudder*); but I still contest there is a definitional issue here. It is not like an Irish joke, where the punchline relies on the prejudice. It is surely possible to tell all sorts of joke which reference rape without condoning or normalising it, or is there a particular subgenre of humour I am missing here of a "all women women want it really so it is okay violently assault them" variety?

SUGARAPE.

What was the joke?

I think the article itself was the joke. Those statistics that haven't referenced the source don't suggest why these rapists think all men are rapists, or that this in any way influenced their decision(s), or that there's any corellation with the introduction of rape jokes.

You could just as easily use those statistics to suggest that it wasn't rape jokes, but feminists that made them think that all men are potential rapists and that they're responsible - if you wanted to be extremely lazy and unscientific.

I haven't heard too many rape jokes either, nor would I honestly want to. I'm not PC in the slightest, but I really would be offended by rape jokes. Unless they were about sluts of course, then it's absolutely fine.

You can't fart these days without someone turning their nose up at you.

My favourite Frankie Boyle joke is a rape joke: 'They say that Viagra takes half an hour to work. By half an hour I find the woman has usually managed to wriggle free'.

I can't say I've actually heard all that many rape jokes but if they were any good then I probably laughed.

It's an interesting comment that was posted but it's important to remember that it is the rapist who is in the wrong.

Inadvertant collusion in a rapist's confirmation bias doesn't make me any more responsible for his rapes than a woman wearing a short skirt is to blame for being raped because she is also inadvertantly feeding the rapist's confirmation bias that she 'wants it'.

Interesting example - the joke relies on the fact that rape is not acceptable behaviour, but a similarly structured joke about, say, Paki-bashing would be considered as inciting hatred.

IMHO a rather dubious article. They say that men admit to rape if it isn't called rape, but then don't offer alternative terminology.

And on that basis say 1 in 20 gays are rapists? What are the terms they're referring to?

Next up almost by definition no criminal truly believes what they do is imoral or a crime. Be they shoplifters or genocidares.

This absurd hyper sensitive seeking out of offence benefits nobody.

80% of rape cases collapse does not make the 80% of men found innocent guilty.

Not entirely a rape joke, very much I;m an ugly bloke joke.

Quite well structured as well, but I can see how it would offend.
