Plasmas have a shorter life-span than LCDs though

I hear it's the other way around.

current technology means that contrast can be poor, and fast motion blurry.

I bought Phillips LCD Widescreen several months ago and I was a bit dismayed that some of the things that had looked fine on my 14 years old JVC, displayed the aforementioned shortcomings. I was recently starting to think I've got a defective TV set after all ;) I'm not too knowledgeable about these things, really.
However, a large widescreen is really a plus - for almost all films and most recent TV shows as well.
