I see John Ryan who created Pugwash has just died.

Sad news indeed.

I'm grateful to Snopes for providing proof to many a disbeliever that Captain Pugwash was not rife with double entendres: http://www.snopes.com/radiotv/tv/pugwash.asp

So what do you think Pugwash means then?

Merely a bastardization of the eskimo word for 'deep water'. No doubt it became corrupted to mean some vulgar act long after the Pugwash character was created.

Good innings, life well spent.

RIP.

RIP

Sad news indeed but in addition to many happy memories of the cartoons there is also that brilliant theme tune. Enjoy once more...The Trumpet Hornpipe.

For the last time there aren't any double entendres!

RIP Mr Ryan. What a great creation - it's lasted for decades and decades for good reason.

I don't know what versions of the stories you are reading angie but I'm glad they are being enjoyed.

It's true that the audio on CP was slightly misleading (presumably unintentionally) over the pronounciation of 'Master Mate' though.
